JAPAN

Winter 2013
Legendary Powder of Japan’s North Island, Hokkaido, A well kept secret…

2013 4Adventure-Travel.com will be focusing on Japan. Our hosts Jill and Ross will be living in Niseko, January, February and March. We will be able to design a special vacation package just for you!

We love Japan…ski powder, eat great food and sushi, soak in natural hot springs and visit a unique culture.

Hokkaido is the northern most island in Japan. It is one of the snowiest places on earth. Angle Dust or Diamond Dust is what the locals call it.

NISEKO

At the resort town of Niseko, with upwards of 16 meters of snow and boasts four major ski resorts. Known as the Powder Capital of the World. There are several backcountry gates that provide access to some great backcountry skiing. The variety of terrain you can access both inbounds and through the gate system is mind blowing. Be prepared for snow. It can snow for days on end.

A great aspect of our trip is the accommodations, the Green Leaf Hotel, has its own natural hot springs. The hot springs themselves are fantastic not just for the soaking experience, but for the integration into Japanese onsen culture. There is no better way to relax after a day of powder skiing than with a hot soak from a natural spring.

Japanese take pride in their food. It is one of the highlights of the trip. The hotel has beautiful Japanese food nightly. At times you have no idea what you’re eating, but you know it’s been prepared just right. Being on the bus loop we can also travel into town and dine at the many fine restaurants the resort has to offer.

Our PSO: Powder, Sushi, Osen trips take advantage of the amount of snow, a ski in/ski out with its own hot springs and great Japanese food.

DIASETSUZAN NATIONAL PARK

The Diasetsuzan National Park the mountainous region of central Hokkaido.

Trips offered to these destinations are mostly backcountry by nature.

If you like skiing quality powder, eating great, food, soaking in hot springs and don’t mind working for your turns, check out the Diasetsuzan National Park trips.

PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION It gets cold in Hokkaido, really cold. Last year we hiked and skied in several days of 0 degrees Fahrenheit. The correct equipment is essential and there were many times when we hiked with our down jackets on. You must be prepared for the cold and have experience backcountry skiing before joining this trip. It also snows a lot, so your gear will need to withstand a snowstorm and dry out overnight. A thermos of hot liquid is essential, so pack a thermos that you can fill each morning. Camelbacks are not recommended as they often freeze. Bring water bottles instead. Fat skis are the key to skiing really deep powder and a minimum of 100 mm under foot with skins to match is highly recommended. You must be a level 8-9 skier and be able to ski continuous powder turns. Also, your fitness level should be such that you are able to hike several laps during the course of the day. The days can be physically demanding so plan ahead and train accordingly in order to get the most out of this trip. …you will never ski lighter and dryer powder in your life!!!!

Backcountry Ski Trips

Fresh Tracks…there are a few ways to get them. One way is to take a helicopter or snow cat, and lastly you can hike for your turns.

Backcountry skiing has been the biggest growth area of the ski industry now for a couple of years. It’s not only the equipment that’s allowing us to do so, but the realization that the “up” is an important part of the whole skiing experience, as well as the down.

Japan’s Backcountry Trips to the central North Island offers the lightest snow on earth.

Our European Ski Trips have an element of backcountry skiing. We always hire local UIAGM guides.

Europe
Skiing in Europe is one of those things that have to be experienced. We focus on two regions that we feel truly represent the best of European skiing.
Chanonix offers big mountain skiing in some even bigger terrain. With five major resorts to choose from and some off piste skiing that will blow your mind it offers terrain we don’t get in North America. The towns excellent restaurants, shops and back drop are second to none and the options and places you can access make this a must do trip.
St Anton offers equally stunning views in a beautiful high mountain setting. Considered to be the “cradle of skiing”, the rich cultural feel is still very much preserved within the town. Unlike Chamonix there are not glaciers in the St Anton area, so the terrain you can access through the interconnected lift system is huge.
Beyond the skiing, the European mountain culture has developed over hundreds of years. Small mountain villages and chalets dot the landscape and offer some of Europe’s finest food. Providing regional specialties these mountain chalets have been in operation since skiing was invented. Many of these places you ski to for lunch, while others are tucked away in the basement of a chalet.
The massive trams, 8 pack heated detachable chairs, and train system give you an amazing selection of terrain. Throw in a UIAGM certified local guide for two days and the possibilities are endless.

St Anton: Austrian Alps Adventure
Being a part of the Arlberg mountain range, skiing in St. Anton offers an extensive amount of groomed terrain and a resort height of 1,300m, with a top elevation of 2,800m. Skiing in the St. Anton region offers a huge variety to terrain. There are steep challenging runs as well as a wide choice of intermediate and advanced runs, and some of the best off-piste skiing in Austria.
The traditional Tyrolean village is attractive and picturesque, with a well-equipped pedestrian centre and a wide choice of shops and accommodation catering for those on a skiing holiday.
We will spend the first three days getting our St Anton ski legs, skiing perhaps the Vallugagrat to the village of St. Christoph or exploring Zurs, Lech, Stuben, St. Christoph, Sonnenkopf (Klösterle) or Zug. A classic ski adventure in the St Anton area is to complete” the white ring”, a day of skiing a circuit around the areas of St Anton.
The following two days we will ski with a local UIAGM internationally certified guide who will take us off piste skiing wherever the weather and snow conditions permit us. St Anton has some of the best off-piste skiing in Austria and we plan to take advantage of it.
